Part One: In Which I Get Excited About Interviews
Pixies bassist/Breeders guitarist/coolest living human Kim Deal didn’t seem to believe me when I told her she was a sex symbol.
It made me smile to find out that I have the same favorite Oblique Strategy as Kevin Barnes, the leader of of Montreal: “Don’t build a wall, make a brick.”
I’m doubly proud to have interviewed one of my personal heroes, Frank Portman, for my favorite online magazine, The Morning News. Frank (a.k.a. Dr. Frank) is the songwriter and frontman of the excellent Bay Area rock band The Mr. T Experience, and the author of one of my favorite books, King Dork. We talked about his new novel, Andromeda Klein, which stars a weirdly endearing teenage occultist.
Part Two: In Which My Friends Amaze Me, Always
My good friend and former roommate, Byron Landry, now writes a weekly Austin, TX-focused arts column for the Austin Enchilada. I like how it’s shaping up thus far. My only complaint is with Mr. Landry’s lack of attention to kinetic sculpture races. I trust he will correct this with due haste.
Kieron Gillen is writing S.W.O.R.D., his first ongoing series for Marvel, which has caused him to become (more of) “an over-excited gibbering loon.” He’s also due to start a six-issue run on Thor. It’s quite a lot of fun watching him get famous, actually.
In other Team Phonogram developments, the much-hyped Phonogram t-shirt (designed by McKelvie, of course) is available through Khepri Comics. It’s a beautiful shirt, but you should probably get one as soon as you can. They’re already out of my size.
Jeff Croft did an interview with Designer’s Couch, where he gave a bunch of sensible answers and pretended he’s not a huge deal in the web design world.
