Field-Tested Books, a project by Coudal Partners — the Layer Tennis guys! — attempts to pin down the tricky relationship between a book and a reading environment. Several brilliant writers relate their experiences with “a certain book, read in a certain place,” and the results are fascinating.
Essays by the likes of Rosecrans Baldwin, Andrei Codrescu, John Gruber and Ben Karlin can be found online or in the Field-Tested Books book, which is hot off the presses. For each copy sold, Coudal will make a donation to First Book, so a kid will have a new book, too. I contributed a bit about reading Dune at the zoo as a teenager to the online version of FTB.
